Growing Onions at Home in 5L Plastic Bottles: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step-by-Step Guide:

  • Prepare Your Plastic Bottles:
    • Ensure the plastic bottles are clean and dry. Remove any labels or stickers from the surface.
    • Using a knife or scissors, cut off the top part of the bottle, leaving you with a cylindrical shape. This will serve as your planting container.
  • Make Holes for Planting:
    • Carefully puncture holes on all sides of the plastic bottle. These holes will be where you plant your onion sets. Make sure to space the holes evenly around the bottle, leaving enough room for the onions to grow without crowding each other.
  • Fill with Compost:
    • Fill the plastic bottle with high-quality compost or potting mix. Ensure the soil is well-draining and rich in nutrients, as onions thrive in loose, fertile soil.
  • Plant Your Onions:
    • Take small onion sets or bulbs and place one in each hole. Push them gently into the compost until they are level with the surface of the bottle.
  • Water Thoroughly:
    • After planting your onions, give them a good soak with water. Ensure that the soil is evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Optional: Hanging the Bottles:
    • If you’re short on space or want to save floor space, you can hang the plastic bottles by threading string through the bottle’s neck and suspending them from hooks or a rack.
  • Provide Adequate Sunlight:
    • Place your onion-filled bottles in a sunny location. Onions require at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily to grow properly.
  • Maintenance:
    • Regularly check the moisture level of the soil and water when it starts to dry out. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
    • Keep an eye out for any pests or diseases and take appropriate measures if necessary.
    • Onions typically take 90-120 days to mature, so be patient and continue caring for your plants.
  • Harvesting:
    • When the onion tops begin to yellow and fall over, it’s time to harvest. Carefully pull the onions out of the bottle.
